PFAS: a problem and an opportunity for the laboratory

There is no getting around it: PFAS is recognised worldwide as a major environmental problem.

However, this also presents an opportunity for laboratories — an opportunity to contribute to mapping PFAS in soil, water and food and thus play a valuable role in protecting the environment and public health.

Determining PFAS is challenging: extremely low concentrations, high risk of contamination and a need for reliable, reproducible results.

A good analysis starts with good sample preparation — without that foundation, even the best analysis method loses its value.

Do you spend too much time on PFAS (soil) extraction and repeat the same manual steps every day?

Then this seminar is for you.

Discover a fully automated PFAS extraction workflow with the ePrep® ONE and Advion-Interchim SPE-LV6.

During this seminar, we will show you how to:

  • minimise manual operations
  • significantly increase the throughput of your analyses
  • and still achieve low quantification limits (e.g. 0.02 µg/kg for soil).

And in the afternoon, you can experience the technologies for yourself during practical hands-on demonstrations of the ePrep® ONE, SPE systems and additional sample prep tools.

This will allow you to see in practice how automation works — from extraction to clean-up — and what this can mean for your own workflow.

In short: in just one day, you will discover how you can make your PFAS sample preparation faster, cleaner and more reliable with modern, integrated solutions.

Our contribution

Instrument Solutions is organising this day together with experts from Advion Interchim, ePrep Europe and Salm en Kipp.

We are pooling our knowledge to demonstrate how SPE and µSPE can be efficiently combined into a complete and automated workflow – from extraction to analysis.

In addition, cryogenic grinding and microwave sample preparation will be briefly explained as complementary techniques for optimally preparing samples for PFAS determination.

The Laborama trade fair will be held at Brussels Expo on March 20 & 21, 2025. Instrument Solutions will once again be participating as an exhibitor this year, together with our sister company SALM EN KIPP.

We cordially invite you to an exciting 3-day training course ‘Get more out of your HPLC and/or GPC’, on November 28-30, 2023 in Breukelen, NL.

Reason

The reason for organizing this event stems from a common observation in the field: often users are not fully aware of the extensive capabilities that HPLC and GPC/SEC offer for determining things like mole mass and size of components. Your HPLC or GPC/SEC system is often capable of providing more information than you may suspect.

Aim

During this training course you will have the opportunity, under the guidance of two renowned experts, namely Dr. Christian Dauwe of AppliChrom and Dr. Klaus-Dieter Bures of WGE Dr. Bures, to discover how to take advantage of the various aspects of these analytical techniques on the basis of a practical example with gummy bears, including packaging. This will cover the following possibilities:

  • Determining low molecular weight components using HPLC
  • Determining high molecular weight components via Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC).

We will teach you how to determine the identity, concentration, molar mass and molecular size of different components taking into account various factors such as the type of chromatography column, measurement conditions and detector type.

Using a practical example with gummy bears, including packaging, low and high molecular weight components are determined.tector.
